WHO Senior Emergency Officer Katrin Smallwood acknowledged that the absence of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan is unlikely. This was reported on November 8 by the BBC.

Smallwood said the coronavirus has been spreading around the world for two years now. “From a scientific point of view, it is unlikely that the virus does not circulate in Turkmenistan,” the expert said.

The journalists asked if the WHO believes that the Turkmen authorities are providing false information. Smallwood responded that WHO is not authorised to question whether a country is acting in the spirit of international health regulations. At the same time, the expert emphasised that it is more important to try to establish a dialogue with such authorities as Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s regime than “to make statements that in fact may not lead to the actions that we would like to see.”
