A missile shell found at the site of a packed train station where dozens of civilians were killed in eastern Ukraine had “for the children” written on it, according to images and video allegedly taken in the aftermath.

The Tochka-U appears to have deposited cluster munitions over a crowd of evacuees at Kramatorsk railway station, killing at least 39 civilians evacuating, before crashing nearby.

The message, presumably written by the Russian servicemen who fired the missile, has been interpreted to mean that the bombs are revenge for children killed by Ukrainian forces.

Russian propaganda narratives accuse Ukraine of bombing children in separatist Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

The Kremlin has tried to justify the war as a “liberation” of those regions and revenge for such alleged attacks.
