The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the President of Israel Yitzhak Herzog issued a joint statement after the first day of the two-day visit of the President of Israel to Kyiv.

The text of the statement was published by the  Office of the President of Ukraine , Ukrinform reports.

In particular, Ukraine and Israel reaffirmed their commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. In this regard, the Israeli side expressed hope that thanks to international diplomatic efforts, Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity will be restored in the near future.

The parties praised the implementation of the provisions of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 2021, and expressed hope for the start of negotiations on extending the free trade regime between the two countries to the service sector. The parties stressed the importance of resuming the work of the joint Ukrainian-Israeli commission on trade and economic cooperation as soon as the epidemic situation in both countries allows.

The Presidents of Ukraine and Israel also stressed the importance of coordinating efforts to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, inter alia, through mutual recognition of vaccination certificates in the near future, and welcomed bilateral cooperation in this area.

The Israeli side also noted Ukraine’s systematic efforts to create appropriate conditions for Jewish pilgrims to visit historical and sacred sites on its territory, as well as to conduct religious ceremonies, including the organization of the annual pilgrimage of Bratslav Hasids to Uman.

The joint statement also states that the Presidents of Ukraine and Israel, together with other high-level delegations, will take part in events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the mass shootings in Babyn Yar. In this regard, the parties stressed the need to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, as well as the importance of educational efforts at the national and international levels in order to prevent the recurrence of such heinous crimes.

Instead, the Ukrainian side noted with gratitude President Yitzhak Herzog’s commemoration of the Holodomor victims in Ukraine. The parties stressed the importance of continuing educational efforts aimed at perpetuating the memory and disseminating information about the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
