The conditions for paying gas contracts in rubles will be clarified as contacts with buyers of Russian gas are made, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president. The Kremlin representative urged to wait for this moment and recalled that the head of state instructed to work out this mechanism within a week.
“The President yesterday instructed to work out a mechanism within a week and create conditions for this payment to be made in rubles. Accordingly, as contacts with gas buyers are made and the conditions for payment in rubles are explained, they will be able to formulate their position. Let’s wait for this moment,” Peskov said.
As reported, Vladimir Putin sent instructions to the government to give a directive to Gazprom to change the currency of payments for natural gas in existing contracts for rubles. According to the president, the changes will affect only the currency in which subsequent payments will be made. He also instructed the Central Bank and the Cabinet of Ministers to determine the procedure for transactions with Europe in rubles within a week.
