In January-November 2021, Ukraine increased the foreign exchange costs for imports of coal and anthracite by 31% compared to the same period last year – up to 2.068 billion dollars.

Relevant data are posted on the website of the State Customs Service.

According to the customs, 17.1 million tons of coal were imported to Ukraine during the reporting period, and 15.4 million tons (+ 11%) a year earlier. The largest suppliers in this period were Russia, the United States and Kazakhstan.

Imports of coal from Russia in monetary terms for eleven months amounted to 1 billion 337 million dollars. (64.7%), from the United States – 398.2 million dollars. (19.3%). Ukraine imported $ 220.6 million worth of coal from Kazakhstan. (10.7%). Coal worth $ 111.9 million was imported from other countries.

It should be noted that, compared to January-November 2020, this year the share of coal imports from Russia increased by 4%.

Situation with coal reserves:

On November 1, 2021, the Russian Federation suspended the export of thermal coal to Ukraine.

These are coal grade A (anthracite) and T (lean). Such coal was imported by DTEK (Luhansk TPP, Kryvyi Rih TPP), Donbasenergo (Slovyanska TPP) and Technova (Darnytsya TPP, Sumy TPP, Chernihiv TPP).
